Fusion skills" or the art of becoming one with gAI

Article

The wave of generative artificial intelligence (gAI) is sweeping across the world in a dazzling and unstoppable way, impacting the world in many areas. In this context, is it a question of collaboration? Conflict or... merge with the gAI?

This is the cyberanthropological question that authors Paul R. Daugherty and H. James Wilson set out to answer in their book Human + Machine, published in 2018. Still as enlightening today, their theory highlights the fact that collaboration between humans and "machines" requires the development of eight "fusion skills".

With increasingly powerful and essential IAGs taking hold in the marketplace, which skills should be cultivated to ride the wave? Here's an overview of these eight "fusion skills".

"Rehumanisation of time": the ability to devote free time to socialising, ideation and decision-making.

"Responsible standardisation": the ability to make trade-offs and put results into perspective with a view to the responsible and sustainable use of AI.

"Developing judgement": critical thinking, the ability to question and analyse data, distinguish between what is true and what is false, and make sound, well-founded judgements based on reliable data.

"Intelligent questioning": knowing what question to ask the AIg (the right prompt) with different levels of abstraction to obtain relevant answers.

"Autonomisation with robots": the ability to collaborate with AIg in order to enhance one's capabilities

"Holistic fusion": willingness to use the AIg as a tool that is an extension of our body or mind

"Reciprocal learning": ability to learn from the AIg so that, in return, it gives us "super powers" (processing, analysing data, for example)

"Permanent imagination": the ability to imagine new processes, new experiments, new leadership, a new way of circulating data, etc.

So, according to the authors, each of these eight skills stimulates the fusion between human and machine to improve the results of a business process in particular. This new paradigm differs from previous ones by virtue of the special interaction between human and machine: "the machine learns from us, just as we learn from it". In addition to the major challenges in terms of social, ethical and environmental responsibility, this symbiosis opens up as yet unknown perspectives and questions our very conception of humanity.
